The element gold was found in 1848 by a man called John. A Supper. He discovered it in Coloma while he was building a saw-mill and when they were digging they started to find these yellow bits now called gold nuggets and didn't know what they were. Gold was used for thousands of years before that for jewelery but they didn't know it was worth so much.
